Let Us Introduce You... We are very pleased to tell you that we have added a new massage therapist to our practice. His name is Erasmo Garza. Erasmo is a retired teacher and school administrator who taught sixth grade for sixteen years. For the last twenty-one years he was a principal or assistant principal at all levels (K-12). Erasmo is married and has two children—a daughter, who is at the University of Houston pursuing a master’s degree, and a son, who is at Columbia University in New York. Erasmo enjoys traveling to New York on Saturdays to see his son play football, although Erasmo tells us that Columbia and the Redskins are having the same “winning season”. Erasmo has always had an interest in massage therapy; so, after retiring, he decided to pursue that interest. It has proven to be very beneficial for his wife, who recently retired on disability because of a back problem. Erasmo uses his massage therapy skills to relieve his wife’s back discomfort. He has a fascination with building things and keeping things running, a fascination that extends to the human body. Erasmo’s particular expertise is in dealing with injuries and chronic pain. To that end, he specializes in deep tissue massage, injury massage, trigger point therapy, and structural bodywork.
. Deep tissue massage addresses the muscles that are found below the superficial layers of muscle with very firm pressure and slow deep strokes. It can be very soothing and relaxing.
. Injury massage focuses on specific areas of the body that have incurred injury, such as legs, upper/lower back, arms, neck. The goal is to bring the injured area slowly back to full function and range of motion.
Injury massage generally gives the client enormous relief.
. Trigger point therapy is often incorporated with injury massage and is used to promote functionality of the injured muscles. Trigger point therapy can be very deep and uncomfortable (not painful), but in many cases gives much needed pain relief.
. Structural bodywork deals with balance and integrity of the body. Chronic pain often arises from repetitive activity or the lack of balance in performing tasks. It can also come from bad habits and posture over time. Structural bodywork seeks to return the body to balance by encouraging tone in some muscles and by stretching others. Although this type of therapy is very deep and sometimes uncomfortable, it is very effective in eliminating chronic holding patterns and, ultimately, pain. Structural bodywork is performed as a series of sessions.
. Erasmo is also a firm believer in massage for relaxation and stress relief. For those who want to escape from their hectic lives for an hour or hour and a half, he very much enjoys treating them to a very relaxing, non-taxing Swedish massage.
We encourage all of you to take advantage of Erasmo’s expertise and warm, caring massage therapy skills. Also, please tell your friends and relatives about the additional types of bodywork he brings to our practice.

Winter Illnesses-We Can Help: Winter and holiday time are here, bringing with them much joy, togetherness, goodwill, and, unfortunately, a fair amount of stress. It is widely accepted nowadays that stress negatively impacts the immune system, which is why bodywork sessions are especially important this time of year. All bodywork sessions are relaxing, and therefore stress reducing, of course, but several of the techniques we use at Partners in Bodywork specifically boost the immune system as well.
The main component of the immune response is the lymphatic system, which produces and transports most of our white blood cells. Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) maximizes the functioning of that system, along with reducing inflammation so that infectious agents have fewer places to hide in the body. Lymphatic fluid has the approximate consistency of water, and we all have miles of microscopic lymph transport vessels in our bodies as well as between four and eight hundred lymph nodes. An LDT session can be a wonderful experience, as incredibly gentle strokes release blockages in the lymphatic “rivers,” causing the lymph to flow freely as it’s meant to. Once the body has full lymphatic capacity, infections are much easier to resist, and energy level usually goes way up. LDT can be performed as part or all of a bodywork session.
Another immune-boosting therapy that we offer is the Raindrop Technique. This is a unique aromatherapy session, performed on the feet and back and using up to fifteen different essential oils. The oils and the protocol of their application stimulate the immune response as well as clearing and calming the mind and leaving you smelling wonderful!
We are offering a new type of session this season, called Chakra Attunement. It uses seven flower essences, which were developed by Australian naturopath, Ben Risby-Jones. During an attunement session, the essences are applied to your charkas (i.e. energy centers) in order to gently support energetic alignment and enable you to take in the unconditional support of the universal life force. Thus, you are supported in maintaining awareness of your truest self, especially during what can be a difficult time of year.
We at Partners in Bodywork want to be a caring, useful, educational part of the taking-care-of-you process. We are here to help, and we wish all of you good health and much joy.

Be Aware!: Starting in the winter session, Joan will be teaching a class for the Montgomery County Recreation Department. The focus of the class is to help people become aware of how they use their bodies in everyday activities, which is the first step in making changes towards feeling better. The series will be given twice during the winter session, each consisting of four two-hour sessions. The first series begins January 9 and the second one begins February 6.
If you have questions about the class, please feel free to call Joan at (301) 675-3122 or email her at palmer7j2002@yahoo.com. To register online for the class, go to http://recweb.montgomerycountymd.gov or pick up a registration form next time you visit our office. To talk to someone at the Department of Recreation, call (240) 777-6870.

Lymph Drainage of the Brain:
Christina will be taking an exciting new class in December called Lymph Drainage of the Brain. It will be taught by one of the world’s leading developers of lymphatic drainage techniques, Dr. Bruno Chikly, and it will address very precise areas of the brain and spinal cord, along with pathologies related to the central and autonomic nervous systems, such as closed-head injuries, whiplash, headaches, dyslexia, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease.
